“Language Loot” is a language-learning game concept developed during the “Game Changer” Game Jam event in Copenhagen in 2023.
As the UX designer, I was responsible for creating the final working prototype of the game using Figma and presenting it to the audience.
The goal was to develop a game that enhances language learning through gamification, fostering engagement and shared learning experiences.
Integrating educational content with a gameplay experience, incorporating an AI language model for backend support, and meeting the tight 48-hour deadline were our man challenges.
MY ROLE | UX Designer
DEVELOPMENT TEAM | Interdisciplinary team of Erasmus+ students
PLATFORM | Mobile
Our team comprised five members with diverse expertise. 2D Artist who worked on the visual design. Programmer focused on the app’s backend. UX Designers (including me) iterated on designs based on team feedback, refined the game mechanics, and ensured an enjoyable user experience.
We conducted interviews with fellow participants who were both gamers and language learners. Insights from these interviews led to the creation of Anna, a persona representing our ideal user. We identified pain points such as the monotony of traditional learning and the desire for interactive methods.
Inspired by Duolingo’s story-based approach, we brainstormed a multiplayer element for the game. We sketched, wireframed, and created a prototype using Figma, focusing on intuitive and engaging user flow.
Language Loot features adventure stories where players guess missing words based on context, with options to play in various languages.
The overall experience was highly rewarding and ignited my passion for creating games and following the path of UX/UI designer in games!
In our final design, Language Loot, is a multiplayer language-learning game that immerses players in adventure stories while building their linguistic skills. The game was well-received during the final presentation, with participants expressing excitement about its potential.
We missed the deadline for final game implementation to the server, so the game was not playable during the presentation.
Moving forward, there are opportunities to refine the game further, such as expanding the story, adding a daily reward system to increase learning incentives, and integrating the app with a new AI language model.
