Survival Nation Mobile is a mobile adaptation of the VR and PC versions of the game. This top-down shooter places players in a zombie apocalypse, where survival is the primary objective. My contributions were focused on research and analysis, with additional tasks related to feature design and icon creation.
Goals
Primarily, to ensure the controls are user-friendly and that visuals are optimized for mobile devices. Additionaly, focus on reusability by leveraging existing solutions from other game versions to avoid delays and unpredictability that often come with implementing entirely new features.
Challenges
In general, the biggest challenge was to manage the complexity of adapting UI elements from other platforms to fit the mobile experience without compromising its quality or functionality, i.e. balancing the need for distinct and intuitive mobile controls while maintaining consistency with previous versions of the game.
MY ROLE | UX/UI Designer
DEVELOPED BY | Wenkly Studio
PLATFORM | Mobile
MY SCOPE:
- UX/UI audit and redesign
- Icons design
- Features and notifications UX/UI design
- UX/UI research and analysis
I worked closely with the Game Designer to finalize the look and feel, as well as the overall user experience, particularly around controls and notifications, and collaborated with developers during the implementation phase and engaged with testers to address feedback on notifications. Independently, I conducted shop analysis and research, ensuring the design aligned with current mobile gaming trends.
I engaged in collaboration with the Game Designer and Project Managers to identify the project requirements and ensure clarity and alignment. Extensive benchmarking analysis and desk research helped to inform the design of the in-game shop and optimize layout and buttons' placement. This research included analyzing games like Diablo Immortal, Grim Soul, World of Kings, and Evil Lands, focusing on ergonomics and User-Centric Design principles.
As part of planning I created a moodboard with UI inspirations, selected a new color palette, and restructured the information architecture to ensure ease of navigation on mobile screens. I also frequently collaborated with other team members to refine these elements.
Key tasks included: designing new features such as daily rewards, informed by research and current trends; Redesigning UI elements to enhance usability on mobile devices; Creating new icons and analyzing action notifications, providing feedback and solutions to improve user interaction.
Mockups were prioritizing mobile devices, particularly phones, to ensure optimal functionality and user experience. Necessary refinements were made based on iterative testing, focusing on improving the notifications UI.
- The research phase provided invaluable insights that informed the design process.
- The Human-Centered Design approach was particularly effective in optimizing the layout for mobile devices.
- The new icons received positive feedback from the Graphic Team Lead, highlighting the success of the visual design.
A gap in the playtesting process on my end, unfortunately led to the late discovery of an issue during the QA phase. Hence, I need to make detailed testing scenarios before playtesting in order not to miss anything.
During my research I learned a lot about the importance and impact of design on the success of microtransactions in mobile games. Also, to avoid oversights, it’s crucial to develop good testing scenarios before playtesting to ensure all aspects are thoroughly checked.
